I'll
Vote For That
State Cap On Real Estate Taxes: Randy
Wright is right. If the city would’ve
given deeper real estate tax relief, “I
would not be standing here,” said
Norfolk City Councilman Randy Wright
to the General Assembly. I agree
with Randy and advocate a statewide
limitation on how much real estate
taxes can grow in a single year.
However, no cap will happen this
year as the bill to do so was killed
in committee at the General Assembly.
The bill would have simply limited
increases to 5% a year. 5%. No cuts.
No starving children or closing schools.
It allows real estate tax increases,
but no more than 5% each year.
You’d think our Virginia
Beach elected officials and their
professional staffs could figure
out a way to survive with this
single revenue stream only growing
at twice the rate of inflation
instead of 3 or 4 times. But until
we elect more people who can, we'll
have to keep working with the General
Assembly for a state cap. I’ll
vote for that!
