Lawsuits R Us: Virginia Beach taxpayers
foot the legal bills as the city
sues the Department of Defense and
the Inspector General about BRAC.
Virginia Beach was not thrilled with
the BRAC decision over a year ago
to realign Oceana Naval Air Station.
BRAC was not thrilled with the overdevelopment-happy
City Council building condos near
runways. Fifteen months later, the
city files two lawsuits. Brilliant
timing! It makes no sense to file
lawsuits the day after the Jacksonville
referendum seeking Oceana’s
jets failed. Oceana is more secure
than ever. Yet the city sues. Even
taxpayer-paid attorneys admit that
the lawsuits are “academic” if
Florida does nothing. Florida’s
pretty adamant about doing nothing. "We
need to get some protection for our
citizens," says Mayor Meyera
Oberndorf. How about protecting them
from paying for frivolous lawsuits?
