I'll
Vote For That
Community Theater Should Have Community
Artwork: Public hearings
often inject common sense into government
decisions.
At Council’s hearing about
spending the city surplus, one idea
was rather brilliant. Part of the
must-spend surplus items was $90,000
for purchasing artwork for the upcoming
Sandler Center theater at Town Center,
which is being marketed as a theater
for the community. Speakers at the
public hearing asked a good question.
If the theater is a community center
for the arts, why not spotlight the
work of local artists for free and
save yourself $90,000?
Great idea! Why purchase artwork
now and lock yourself into displaying
the same piece forever and telling
taxpayers you needed it more
than tax relief? Why not heighten
the image of “community” while
having a constantly rotating
source of artwork to display?
I’ll vote for that!
